Carl Spitzweg`s picturesque motifs tell little stories. His depictions of funny situations, comical scenes and endearing human peculiarities, reflect the bourgeois and sheltered world of the Biedermeier period. The talent for observation and empathy with which Carl Spitzweg characterizes his contemporaries is especially impressive. The enchanting paintings captivate the beholder with their masterly rendering of light and color effects. Carl Spitzweg, a pharmacist by training who was born in Munich in 1808, was self-taught as far as his painting techniques were concerned and at first he worked as an illustrator for a satirical magazine such as the “Fliegende Blätter“. He died in 1885.
