Raphael was born in 1483 in the town of Urbino, Italy, and died at the age of 37 in Rome. His father taught him how to paint. However, what was more important for Raphael’s artistic progress were his studies with Pietro Perugino in Perugia. Soon Raphael developed his own style of painting. His famous paintings of the Virgin Mary seem to have been created with amazing effortlessness and prove his talent for depicting the human form in all its beauty. Soon the artist was called to the Papal Court where he painted frescoes and was later on pronounced the architect of the new St. Peter’s Church. In Raphael’s works, the artistic ideal of High Renaissance was perfected and he is considered one of the most successful and popular artists in history.
