Georgia O’Keeffe studied art at New York’s Columbia University and became familiar with the influences of the European avant garde in the lively metropolis at a young age. On the basis of experiments with abstract color compositions, she developed her own style: an organic flowing together of pure colors which reduce her subject to the essential element, as if observed through a burning glass. With her monumental flower portraits, developed to the point of mastery, the artist became the star of the New York art scene during the Twenties and thereby broke into a world still extensively dominated by men. The grand old lady of american painting died in 1986 at the age of 99 years.
