French painter, sculptor and designer. Born 1869 at Le Cateau. Died 1954 in Nice. After graduating in law, Matisse turned to painting, studying first at the Académie Julien and then at the Ecôle des Beaux Arts in Paris. His painting was influenced by various contemporary trends but, above all, by impressionism and Cézanne. In 1905, he was one of the founders of Fauvism. His work was distinguished by the use of bright, pure colors and simple, condensed forms. In 1908, he founded his own school of painting. In 1919, he finally won public recognition. For him, color was always “a living chord of color ... a harmony analogous to musical composition“.
