Roy Lichtenstein, one of the founders of Pop Art in America, once said in an interview: “The world is outside. Pop Art looks out into the world.“ Lichtenstein, who was born in New York in 1923, does this with overwhelming simplicity, distance and precision. We have an experiment to thank for his comic-type pictures. The artist copied small chewing-gum wrappers for his children, and one day, he hit upon the idea of reproducing the wrapper in large dimensions, if only to see the effect. He found the result very interesting and thus became one of the most famous New York Pop Artists during the years to follow. His monumental “everyday fetishes“ have today made him the embodiment of Pop Art all over the world.
