Influenced by Fauvism and the constant intellectual conflict with the art world, Wassily Kandinsky became the pioneer of abstract painting. Born in Moscow 1866, he studied law and economics before coming to Munich in 1896 where he studied under Franz von Stuck among others. His first pictures were painted under the influence of Art Nouveau, Russian folklore and Impressionism. In 1912, with his friends Klee, Macke and Marc, he formed the group of artists known as the ”Blauer Reiter“ after one of Kandinskys pictures. His pictures opened the way for the release of color and for abstract-expressionist compositions and improvisations.
Kandinsky died 1944 in Paris, where he had lived since his emigration in 1933.
