Paul Klee, the son of a German musician, was born on December 18th 1879 at München-Buchsee near Berne. He received his first instruction in drawing and painting under Franz von Stuck in Munich, where he settled after a stay in Italy. Here, together with Kandinsky, Marc and Macke, he founded the ”Blauer Reiter“ group. A journey to Tunisia with Macke in August 1914 had a profound and lasting influence on his work. Klee developed his own language of painting which helped him towards the breakthrough in 1917. Part of the attraction of his work lies in the fact that his pictures tell stories, which are always capable of awakening new associations in the viewer. Klee died of an incurable disease in 1940 at Muralto near Locarno.
