Gustav Klimt, born near Vienna in 1862, is considered one of the major representatives of art nouveau. In his drawings, paintings and frescoes, he dispenses with spatial effects in favour of emphasis of ornamental and decorative elements, often supported by mosaik-type use of gold and silver coating. The celebration of beauty, and especially of female beauty, was the focus of his work. His frequent portrayal of naked entwined bodies was considered offensive and obscene by his contemporaries. Klimt was a founding member and the first president of the Viennese Secession. He died in 1918.
