Caspar David Friedrich, who was born in Greifswald, Germany, in 1774 and died in Dresden in 1840, is the most important landscape painter of German Romanticism. In his paintings he expresses the novel perception of nature during Romanticism by means of his emotional and contemplative way of looking at nature. Together with Philipp Otto Runge, he was part of the “Dresden Circle“ which also included the poets Ludwig Tieck and Novalis. His paintings show a world without limits, an infinity of nature which a human being can only grasp with his or her inner emotions. The symbolic message of his soulful paintings is emphasized by light and shadow as well as by the depth and simplicity of the colors.
