Born in 1898, the Dutch graphic artist, Maurits Cornelis Escher, ranks among the great exceptions of twentieth century art, for with his mathematical, constructional paintings he created an entirely new and distinctive style. Different levels of observation appear to be united into a single perspective in space, physical laws of space and time being turned upside down. The seemingly impossible is made possible. No wonder that in Escher´s works, even waterfalls flow uphill. In all, differentiation is made among three distinct creative periods, the metamorphosis period, the perspectives and finally a move towards infinity. His death in 1972 ultimately led the artist himself to the limits of what is possible.e Unendlichkeit. Durch seinen Tod im Jahre 1972 wurde der Künstler selbst an diese Grenzen geführt.
