Nicolas de Stael was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1914. After his education at the Art Academy in Brussels, he was mostly influenced by the works of Cézanne, Matisse and Braque; later on he turned to Cubism. During the last phase of his artistic period, he combined abstract and concrete elements and developed a style which is characterized by the structuring of space and the use of light effects. The deep emotions of the artist are reflected in his works. Although Nicolas de Stael was internationally acknowledged, he drifted towards an artistic and personal crisis which culminated in his suicide in 1955.
