It was Dürer who knew how to transfer art from the craftsman level to another individual dimension. This way, he overcame the medieval traditions and opened the way for art of modern times. Shaped by his travels to Italy, Dürer acquired a degree of self-confidence and individualism in his art which was extraordinary in his time and age. Sensitivity and an excellent observant eye characterize both Dürer’s portraits and his graphic works. The artist succeeded in conveying the ideas of Italian Renaissance to German art. Albrecht Dürer was born in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1471 and died there in 1528.
